Custom Blinds & Shades in Mebane, NC

Mebane sits on a county line, and arguably on a regional one too. Most of the city is in Alamance County, two slivers on its east side fall in Orange, and most local phone numbers still carry the 919 area code that the rest of Alamance gave up for 336.

For window treatments the more useful split is age. The census counted 11,393 people here in 2010 and 17,797 in 2020, so a big share of the houses in town are recent. The older core around downtown is roughly a century older than that, and the two halves call for different conversations at the estimate.

What we see in Mebane homes

Old South Mebane, the grid of numbered streets just south of downtown, went on the National Register in 2011. Its nomination dates the houses from about 1900 into the early 1960s, running from Queen Anne and Craftsman bungalows through Minimal Traditional cottages and Ranch houses. Most are wood frame, one to two-and-a-half stories tall, and the survey found one-over-one double-hung sash to be the favored original window.

A one-over-one sash with its original stops is friendly to an inside mount, provided the jamb is deep enough to clear the sash lock. The catch in a frame that has stood for a hundred years is that it may no longer be a rectangle. We take widths at the head, the meeting rail, and the sill, check both diagonals, and only then choose between an inside and an outside mount.

The same nomination notes that many of these houses now have replacement sash. A replacement unit set inside an old frame almost always leaves a shallower, narrower opening than the one the house was built with. That changes which headrails will fit, so if new windows are on your list, put them in first and have the treatments measured afterward.

Downtown is its own National Register district: about two blocks of brick commercial buildings along Center, Clay, Third, and Fourth streets, dating from the first six decades of the twentieth century. The nomination describes offices and apartments on the upper floors, the old live-above-the-shop arrangement. Upstairs windows in those buildings are set in solid masonry, and roller or Roman shades for them get built to the measured drop instead of being cut down from a catalog length.

Houses built in the last fifteen years are a simpler job. Their windows tend to repeat from room to room, which keeps a whole-house order straightforward. The questions there are usually about bedroom darkness and privacy toward the neighbors rather than about fit.

A National Register listing is not design review

Both of Mebane’s historic districts are National Register listings. Under federal law that status puts no restrictions on what a private owner does with the house, unless federal money or permits are part of the project. Nothing inside your windows needs anyone’s sign-off.

Masonry openings downtown

Upper-story windows in the commercial district sit in brick, and the reveal can be deep but uneven where mortar has been repointed over the decades. We check depth at several points along the head before committing to an inside mount, and we fasten into the masonry with anchors rather than assume there is wood behind the trim.

Questions

Common questions from Mebane homeowners

Is Mebane part of the Triangle or the Triad?

Mostly the Triad, on paper. Alamance County makes up the Burlington metro area, while the Orange County slivers count toward Durham–Chapel Hill. It makes no difference to us. Mebane is on our service list either way, with no trip charge.

Our Old South Mebane house still has its original windows. Will blinds damage the frames?

They should not. Inside-mount brackets go into the head jamb with short screws, and the holes are small enough to fill if the treatment ever comes down. If the original trim is something you want left untouched, an outside mount on the wall above the casing avoids the frame entirely.

When should we book the measure on a new-construction house?

After you have the keys and the builder has finished trim and paint. Measuring before the window returns are drywalled and painted can give numbers that are off by an eighth of an inch or more, which is enough to ruin an inside mount.
